3000 Years, by maximilian
All around us is the culmination of thousands of years of design. Playing on the best of this is key to any classic interior. My first influences arose from growing up amongst the Temple of Apollo at Stourhead and studying in the Neo-Classical mansion at Prior Park: they make it no surprise that I went on to study two degrees in the art and archaeology of the ancient world.
I have always sported a wry smile at the way different cultures have copied or adapted good design from other cultures, sometimes without the best taste. It is also amusing how certain objects, such as Cycladic figurines (below), have gone in and out of fashion as objets d'art.
'Not everybody has a plethora of wonderful objects or family heirlooms; others perhaps just want something else. Purchasing antiques and art is a key part of our design.'
Some of the best motifs and architecture have come from thousands of years of improvement and perfection. Though the difference between good compositions and cobbled-together imitations is sometimes quite difficult to distinguish.
'One of the best things about traditional design is that it’s interesting and, on occasion, humorous too. There can be several levels in a well thought out design – the aesthetic, symbolic and functional. Take a trompe l’oeil playing a visual trick on perception, knowledge and space.'
We can take inspiration from the ancient world and its renaissance, from colours, antiquities and architecture. We use this knowledge to refine our design schemes today. It is the mastering of restraint, placement and context that give true designs their uniqueness. We aim to do the same when we put these designs together.
